Teaching and Learning Hubs Overview

Teaching and Learning Hubs
Workshops

The Belk Center, Achieving the Dream (ATD), and the NC Student Success Center, have established four Teaching and Learning Hubs that are dedicated to helping faculty and staff build equity into learning. The four hubs – Central, East, Piedmont, and West — are operating now. Each of the 58 North Carolina Community Colleges are affiliated with one of the Hubs.

The Hubs offer in-person, virtual, and hybrid workshops and seminars, all of which are open to full- and part-time faculty and staff educators. These professional development sessions help participants learn about, adopt, test, and scale evidence-based strategies that lead to more equitable student outcomes.

Each Hub has two lead colleges, a co-director from each of the two lead colleges, and affiliated colleges in the local area. Faculty from these institutions, led by the co-directors, will shape the Hub’s content and offerings.

The Hubs were developed with input from NC community college presidents, chief academic officers, and full-time and adjunct faculty in the NC Community College System. In addition, case studies at six community colleges informed the planning.

The Hubs

Areas of focus for the Hubs include:

Evidence-based pedagogies and practices that have been shown to improve student learning and close equity gaps.

Validated high-impact practices.

Culturally responsive pedagogies that can help build equity and engage first-generation students, students of color, and low-income students.

Supporting participating campuses in capacity-building efforts to strengthen each institution’s professional learning programs.
