ABOUT US

North Carolina aims to have two million North Carolinians with a postsecondary, high-quality credential or degree by 2030. Attaining this goal — and truly improving outcomes for students — requires large-scale change. Too often, however, colleges end up with a variety of well-meaning but disjointed initiatives and programs.

The NC SSC helps colleges connect the dots — both on their individual campuses and among colleges throughout the state. Through this work, the NC SSC is creating a coherent, statewide framework through which community colleges evaluate, align, and integrate their work. This statewide lens helps colleges learn from one another, makes the student experience consistent throughout the state, and allows for economies of scale in professional development and support.

The NC SSC delivers guidance, technical support, and professional development to community colleges as they work to improve completion rates.

  • A great deal of our work focuses on helping colleges undertake institution-wide change through guided pathways.
  • Our activities also have an immediate impact on the student experience. For example, we help colleges provide direct support to students and have been instrumental in the state’s work to develop training for faculty and staff.
  • Our equity work includes helping colleges use data to understand achievement gaps among students as well as workshops for faculty statewide.

Partnerships

The NC SSC partners with:

  • The NC Community College System Office (SO). The NC SSC is housed at and works collaboratively with the SO to implement its equity efforts and strategic plan, which focuses on helping colleges improve success and attain more equitable results for students.
  • The Belk Center for Community College Leadership on numerous initiatives including evaluation of developmental education reform as well as new professional development opportunities.
  • JFF, which manages the Student Success Center Network.
  • Achieving the Dream to offer services focused on holistic student supports and equity.

The NC SSC thanks its supporters, including the John M. Belk Endowment, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and JFF.
